Stop Your Dog From Jumping Up On You

Of course, any dog owner knows that there are plenty of irritating things your pooch can do. Most owners will find that consistent training in the puppy stage will stop most unwanted behavior. However, some adult dogs develop bad manners simply because they receive less attention as an adult than they did as a puppy. Most owners are disturbed by continuous barking and seek ways to rectify the behavior. Although this is relatively harmless, it can obviously be frustrating. The main reason for a dog jumping up on you is simply to show her affection, and to express how excited she is to see you. Other reasons for jumping up may have to do with the dog’s need to express dominance over visitors to the home, or even because of boredom. Although we may enjoy the affection and excitement of our favorite pet, we certainly never want muddy paws on our favorite pair of jeans, nor does anyone wish to be inadvertently tackled to the ground. The behavior can be especially dangerous when the dog jumps up on senior citizens or small children, sometimes knocking them down in the process.

The dog should be stopped as a puppy from jumping up on any guest or member of the family. By giving attention to the jumping up, you are actually rewarding the dog instead of discouraging the bad habit. The owner must be constant in his efforts to stop the dog from jumping up on people, as just one instance of attention for the behavior will encourage it further. The dog must be aware that there is only one way to receive affection, which is by exhibiting satisfactory behavior. Allowing a dog to jump up some of the time because it’s “cute” and praising her, only to discipline her for doing it at other times, only confuses the dog.  If this is the case, she may never really understand. The dog must learn consistency, that it is as bad to jump up on its owner at any time as it is to jump on other people.

The best way to stop your dog from jumping up is to position yourself facing away from her when she tries, not giving the dog any eye contact. Ignore her completely until she is no longer overly excited, and then give her eye contact. One effective method to stop a dog from jumping up is to divert her attention from the negative behavior to focus on a positive one, such as giving her the command to “sit.” Instead of only giving the pet attention when it is jumping up, the owner should try giving it the attention it is looking for when it behaves properly.
