English Setter Standards

English setters are supposed to be gun dogs, and a hunter’s companion. They should give of the appearance of balance and agility, always looking like they are ready to run and play. The males should look masculine and male like. While at the other end the female English Setter, should easily been seen as feminine.

These standards are the most important. Any English Setter that does not measure up to these will be faulted.

English Setters are supposed to be long and lean. Their skull should be oval with a medium width, getting a little longer when where the ears are attached. The English Setter’s eyes should be round and large, never giving the appearance of bulging or being deepest.

The eyes should have a distinctive darker pigment outlining them. The dog’s nose should be dark brown or black, with wide setting nostrils. The English Setter’s teeth should be close together so that a scissor bite is achievable. Ears are set low and back, they should be below or even with eye level.

The English Setter’s coat should lay flat against their skin with no curls at all. The coat should feather out slightly on the chest, underside of thighs, ears and back of everyone one of their four legs. The English Setter’s coat should be mainly white with darker hairs that will make up the markings of the coat.

Flecks of colors and not huge patches is more desirable. These are just a few of the standards that have been set for this breed, go one line of call your local vet and ask for the rest of the breed’s list.
