Beagle Puppy Training: Keeping Pups Away From Trash

Similar to dog ownership, beagle puppy training is a long-time commitment. It doesn’t stop after a month or two of lessons on obedience, housebreaking and others. They must know a lot of things in order for them not to cause problems to their human family. One lesson is teaching them to keep away from the trash no matter how tempting the scent is.

Beagle is an intelligent breed of canine developed to have the best sense of smell. This characteristic, though a necessity in hunting, could possibly give you problems if he chose to use his talent not on scenting a hare but on the smelly contents of your garbage can. Scavenging is apparently not acceptable for a number of reasons:

  • Trash cans hold all sorts of waste - expired or rotten food, pesticide, poison or chemical containers, shattered pieces of household stuff and almost everything you do not need anymore. These things may cause choking or stomach upset if ingested.
  • The dog may knock down the garbage can hence leaving a clutter in the area. Cleaning the mess he created in the kitchen or your neighbor’s backyard is not an easy task, right?
  • Disobeying your order to stay away from the trashcan is a bad behavior. Soon enough, he will learn how to growl and worse, bite you if you try to stop him from what he is doing.

As a remedy to this issue, teach your puppy the “leave it” or “off”. These commands can help you take control of your dog in various circumstances thus explains why dog experts always point out that dog training should always include lessons on commands like these.

Others use household cleaners like ammonia and bleach to stop them from messing your garbage. Pouring bleach or sprinkling ammonia into your trashcan can make him stay far away from the smell.

If all else fail, buy a trashcan with lid and lock or block off the area where your trashcan is positioned.
